Cooperatives
The Congregation made a commitment to cooperatives for low income people from a team that grew out of the Justice & Equality in Dayton Workshop. In the fall of 2014 that team took a trip to Cincinnati to Meet with Interfaith Business Builders to gather more information.
The Congregation now works with Leaders for Equality and Action in Dayton (LEAD) to further plan about coops in Dayton. LEAD members are working with the Democracy Collaborative to bring a Co-op to Dayton. In the spring of 2015, the LEAD co-op committee and supporters spoke to the Dayton City Commission to gain its support for this economic justice initiative.

The fight for bus stops at the Dayton Mall continues for LEAD and CfR members involved in that issue. At the LEAD rally April 27,2015 we heard an update. ABLE lawyers are working on behalf of citizens who are excluded by the location of the bus stop at the Dayton Mall that is over a hundred yards from the entrance. A case may be brought on the basis of the Americans with Disabilities Act. To become involved: [email protected]

Justice & Equality in Dayton:
Launching a Movement to Challenge Economic Injustice
Guest Speaker: Edie Rasell, PhD plus break out sessions
(Held Saturday, April 12, 2014, Memorial Hall)
Edith Rasell, Ph.D., the minister of the National United Church of Christ Economic Justice and Witness Covenant Office, spoke at this workshop presented by the CfR. The workshop was designed for a broad audience of people of conscience and faith who care about the many issues facing ourselves, our neighbors and our region that have economic causes. An economist, Rasell is known for making economic matters understandable, relevant, and interesting. She spoke from a national perspective. Previously with the Economic Policy Institute for 12 years, she has testified before Congressional committees and published in American Economic Review and the New England Journal of Medicine.
During our break outs together, we shared our local concerns and passions through an activity that surfaced common priorities. Discussion on an education team and a team to explore inequality in our democracy did surface. But four teams formed to explore and organize, setting initial meetings.
These new teams have met and formed direction, and the CfR will have news on this work to challenge economic injustice.
If you missed the workshop, come to the salad supper. Please keep in touch. You make the difference.
